Solar panels in a field under blue sky

Energy, oil and gas

We act for investors, lenders and developers on solar, wind, hydro and transmission assets, and on infrastructure investment platforms. Our work combines transaction documentation with the land title and regulatory diligence that decides whether an asset is bankable.

What we advise on

  • Acquisition of operating and under-construction renewable energy assets
  • Land title diligence across large multi-site portfolios
  • Power purchase agreements, open access and captive structures
  • Tender documents and project agreements with central and state agencies
  • Project finance security and lender diligence
  • Infrastructure investment trusts and platform investments by foreign funds
  • Regulatory proceedings before electricity regulatory commissions

Key law and regulation

Electricity Act, 2003 and rules under it, including the green energy open access rules. State land revenue laws. SEBI (Infrastructure Investment Trusts) Regulations, 2014. Foreign Exchange Management (Non-Debt Instruments) Rules, 2019.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreign investors own 100 percent of an Indian renewable energy project?

Yes. Foreign investment in renewable power generation is permitted up to 100 percent under the automatic route, subject to the general conditions of the foreign investment rules.

Why does land title diligence take so long on solar portfolios?

A single project can sit on land bought or leased from dozens of owners, each with a separate chain of title, revenue record and land use conversion. Each parcel has to be checked against state records, and gaps are common.
